No photo, but Raw milk…

Recently our milk supplier did a voluntary (meaning they didn’t even have to tell us let alone recall the milk) recall of their milk due to concerns over it’s safety. This concern was discovered and eliminated and last weekend we were able to get our milk again. The date that the questionable milk was delivered was January 14. The quick turn around was because of the fact that we consume raw milk. Turns out we didn’t order milk that week and so we were fine, however some of our friends did get ill. The amount of people effected by this was minimized because of how close we are to the farmer. This wouldn’t have been the case should something like this happen with milk you get at a conventional grocery store. How many times do we hear about a recall of a product (I am thinking produce right now but could be anything) and then find out that it is effecting 5 states some of which don’t even neighbor each other? The said recall lasts at least a month too.

I guess this makes stories like this one even more sad. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/feb/13/feds-shut-down-amish-farm-selling-fresh-milk/print/ This Amish farmer’s crime? Transporting a “dangerous product” across state lines and selling it. That dangerous product? Unpasteurized milk. Yep not drugs, or guns, or weapons of any kind. Simply milk that hasn’t been heated to 160 degrees or more. What does that say about our society?

If you would like to learn more about this debate that is going on in our country there is a web cast tomorrow where both sides will be presented http://hlsorgs.com/foodlaw/2012/01/30/raw-milk-debate/ It will also be available after it is over online. I personally plan on watching this tomorrow night.

I grew up on raw milk. It wasn’t illegal in Washington and we actually had a milk man and everything. I wish that still was around today.

    Hi Jennifer,

Am hoping everything is okay. It’s not like you not to post everyday. I guess I got spoiled last year.

    Take care, Rowena
