Doing well, nothing new…

I have been feeling well this week. So I have been getting a lot of things done. Which is good because I had and have a lot to do.

Max is doing well. Last weekend Max kissed his first girl on the cheek.I didn’t see it but Tony did. It was a little girl at the Lutheran Church that we go to (the pastor’s daughter) who had been trying to kiss him for months. He hadn’t seen her in about 2 months because of my chemo (and him not being able to be around children) and because the little girl got a sister a few days before I started chemo.

In other news I thought I would talk about what we are planning on doing this summer. We hope to get a dog early this summer. We are basically waiting till I am done with chemo and any other treatments before we get one. Max REALLY wants a dog. Last weekend we took him for a walk and Tony realized that he was stopping in front of every house to see if there was a dog there. The dog would bark and he would be able to see the dog then. So we hope to get a dog soon.

We are also planning on agarden. Those of you that have been following me since the days of Emily, would remember that the summer after we lost her, we planted a container garden on our patio. This was all we could do because we lived on the second floor. When we purchased the house (when I was 8 months pregnant with Max) we really wanted to grow a garden. We couldn’t do it last year because of the month that Max and I would be gone (Train trip). So this year we are gearing up for a good garden!

We are using the “Square Foot” gardening method. You can find the book here. Basically you plant more in less space. You use raised beds (6 inches) and you use a mixture of peat moss, compost and vermiculite for the soil. This allows you to not worry about your soil conditions. We are planning on 6 four foot square beds.

With this we will grow (numbers are estimate of plants):
Lettuce (a mixture of Craquerelle du Midi, Forellenschluss, Little Gem, Rosalita, and Rouge D’Hiver lettuces)
Mesclun (Sweet Salad Mix)
4 – Tomato (Tasty Treat)
4 – Corn (Ruby Queen Hybrid)
4 – Corn (Early and Often Hybrid)
8 – Green Beans (Stringless Green Pod)
8 – Peas (Burpeeana Early)
Onion (Parade)
4 – Cucumber (Straight Nine Hybrid)
4 – Cucumber (Pickalot Hybrid)
6 – Sweet Pepper (California Wonder)
4 – Tomato (Early and Often Hybrid)
4 – Parsley (Big Italy)
4 – Cilantro (Coriander)
4 – Hot Pepper (Habanero Yellow)
4 – Hot Pepper (Hot Salsa Mix)
4 – Sweet Basil
4 – Hot Pepper (Biker Billy Hybrid)
4 – Dill

This may seem like a lot but we will not be growing THAT much of everything.  The peppers and the tomatoes I plan on starting inside once I am done with this next round of Chemo (so in about a week). All the others will wait till after last frost. Seeing how we still have snow on the ground, who knows when that will be. Ha ha!

That is about all that is happening with me. I should hear how I did at the Echocardiogram on Monday, on Tuesday when I go in for Chemo.

So glad to hear that your are feeling well and getting things done! How nice that you will have a garden this year. You certainly have a great backyard for one. My daughter and her husband are in the process of doing the same thing at their house. They are also using raised beds. I am going to tell them about the “soil” combination that you will be using.
Hoping that you will post some new pictures of Max soon!

    Take care, Rowena
