Some Good News

We spoke with the doctor today who was treating Max on Friday. He says that he looks like a totally different baby and wouldn’t think he was that sick if he didn’t see the x-rays. They now think that the pneumo thorax will resolve itself given enough time and tell us the best treatment is high levels of oxygen, so Max is in a oxyhood right now at ~70% oxygen. We are told that optimistically, he could be out in one week, but that he should be able to go home by his due date (October 10). Max seems much more relaxed and his breathing has slowed down since Friday. The x-rays also show some improvement, but not as much as they were hoping for. There are other treatments to re-expand the lung if it doesn’t heal on its own, but the doctors want to avoid that and give him time to heal because those methods are more invasive and involve putting a tube into his chest. All in all, it was a pretty good day, but it’s hard to be in the ICN again and see the nurses and doctors doing the same things to Max as they did to his sister before she passed away. It’s hard, but we have to keep talling ourselves that Max is a very different baby and being born at 38 weeks is much different situation than being born at 24 weeks.

  1. Congratulations on the birth of baby Max. I’m sorry to hear that he is having some issues with his lungs. I’ve prayed for your and your family and hope that all will be well soon and that Max will be strong and healthy.

  2. Our family is so relieved to see this post. Sharon and I have been worried sick about you guys ever since I logged on and got the news this afternoon, and I’ve been obsessed with checking back, hoping for good news. Thanks so much for posting this, Tony, and please let us know if there is anything we can do. We literally live ten blocks from Pennsy and if you need a break, a shower, a hot meal, a few episodes of Sesame Street, or whatever, just let us know. And if Jennifer needs anything in the hospital while recovering, we’d be more than happy to run it over to her pronto. I’m around all day tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Hang in there—I am hoping it’s good news from here on in and a quick transfer home to where Max and the two of you belong.

I don’t even know what to say other than, I’m sorry. :O(
I followed your story from when your triplets were born and have followed your ups and downs since then. I was so excited when you guys got pregnant and have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of little Max and am so happy for you that he is finally here. I cannot imagine the heartache, frustration and probably anger that you must be feeling at the current situation, when this should be such a happy and enjoyable time in your lives. I pray that little Max makes a speedy recovery and he is home and in your arms where he belongs.
    God Bless!

  4. Hi you don’t know me but I have been following your blog for several months now. I found it by mistake when I was looking for info on prematurity. Anyway, I just want you to know that I am praying for Max that he will come home soon a completely healthy baby and also for God to give you the strength to face the next few weeks as I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to be back in the ICN. I am also having my prayer group I meet with at church pray for you. I hope that’s ok. God bless you.

Congratulations on your new baby boy. Sorry to hear Max is having breathing problems. I had two separate full-term c-section deliveriesa and both had respiratory distress similar to what you are describing. The oxygen boost worked well for both of my babies and I’m praying for the same for yours. Your little Max will be healthy and ready to go home soon.

Thank you for the updates. Sorry there has been a little bump in the road. We are parents of a 25 weeker and can feel your anxiety about ANOTHER nicu experience.
Glad your sweet son is improving.
