Max got his school supplies for this year on Tuesday. Always one of my favorite days of the year. Some supplies are on back order though so we will get a few next week as well. However that isn’t stopping us from starting on Monday!
Max will have this year:
English: Learning Language Arts Through Literature – Red This looks a bit more meaty then what we did last year. Max is more or less reading now so this will build on that. I am also seeing some reference to the bible in this curriculum. I was told that this was a religious curriculum but till now I didn’t see it.
Writing: Handwriting Without Tears – 2nd grade Max started this this week. The first week is just playing games really. I also had him do Monday’s lesson which is an evaluation. To my surprise he got 78% on it. Which is WAY better then I thought he would do. Here is his test:
History: History Odyssey level 1 Middle Ages, with Story of the World (Volume 2 Middle Ages) Activities – I decided to get both History Odyssey and the activity book for Story of the World (which we use in History Odyssey) as sometimes we didn’t do much with History Odyssey because of projects I didn’t think Max would like. This should help that.
Science: REAL Science Odyssey Earth and Space Level 1 – This is left over from the end of last year. We didn’t get through it so we will be finishing it up this year. If we finish it early (which is quite likely) then we will get something else when I order the Math for the second semester.
Math: Singapore Primary Mathematics Standards Edition (link is a pdf of the differences and scope of Singapore Math) level 1B and 2A – Max has just a few weeks left of 1B before he will start to move on to 2A.
Art: Artistic Pursuits level 1 – Max has already started this (after seeing the art supplies he was eager to get started). Here is his first work of art. He was instructed to draw his environment with trees and a doorway. He used watercolor crayons.
German: Little Pim German – We got the teachers edition which includes lessons plans. I plan on doing one lesson a week to allow for review time. I might increase this later as he does better.
So that is all I will be teaching him. He will still have his weekly german class and swim classes and I signed him up for baseball in the spring as well as a winter hitting clinic. So he will be a busy boy this year!
Now to Nathaniel!
Nathaniel did draw while Max was being artistic. Here is what he did:
And this is video taken yesterday at the library while Max was in German class.
Odds and ends:
Max lost a tooth yesterday. That brings him up to 2 teeth gone.
I took this photo the other day. I thought there was something poetic about it.
Maybe it was just sleep deprivation.
This week we have a busy week with school, dermatologist for the boys and me, and other activities. Friday I should be back to normal though so I would expect my next post to be then.
