Today we went into town and walked around a bit. We found ourselves in a book store at one point and I found a French cookbook. I had heard that we eat very French right now since we don’t care about fat. So I was looking at the book and it seemed nice but I would like to get reviews of something before I do an impulse buy. So I went home empty handed.
When I got home I did a search on Amazon for French Cooking. First item on the list was Julia Child. I laughed it off and proceeded to look down the list at other items. I mean Julia Child was that old lady who sounded like the chef on the Muppet Show, how could she help me??
After looking through several pages of french cookbooks I realized that Julia Child was the gold standard. So with an open mind, I went and looked at one of her books and it had a “see inside the book” that I could look at.
To my shock, this is a completely new way of cooking for me. I mean I have heard of this type of cooking when watching those “I can fix your restaurant in 2 days” type shows but never had I actually it in print! She has recipes that are “master” recipes that you can modify to fit what you have on hand. She doesn’t have just one or 2 though, she has several! It isn’t just eggs either (which is my old standby for getting rid of things).
I can now see why this book was so ground breaking. What I think is sad though is that this book isn’t being passed from father to son, mother to daughter. This is a skill that sadly is lacking in our society. We all think we don’t have time to cook when it isn’t we don’t have time to cook, it is that we never learned how to cook!
I didn’t purchase the set. With Tony out of work still, $50 for 2 books isn’t really in the budget. So first thing Tuesday (after we take the van in for it’s estimate) I am going to go down to library and see if her books are there. Maybe I can learn something before I can purchase my own copy.
