Comfort…

I would like to make a habit of writing a blog post everyday. Or most days. To that end, I am using a template that I found for you to take a photo everyday. They tell you a word and you take a photo to represent that. Today the word is comfort. So what else did I choose?

This is my new sewing chair. It swivels, rises and lowers, and even has a compartment under the seat. I got it because as I get older, I am realizing how nothing lasts and this chair, being all squarish shapes, would be very easy to recover when it needs it. To me that is a win win! So far it is very good and sturdy and I can sit in it for hours with no problems. Good as I use it for schooling the boys as well as sewing. So it is my favorite seat in the house!

Today is Tuesday and normally Tuesdays are full of stuff to do with our foster. Today is no exception but we are in a lull right now. I am waiting for a 17 pound box of fabric to arrive today. Yes 17 lbs of cotton fabric. I am starting on a project using a pattern system I found. It is called The Golden Rule (in English). The system has been around since 1935 in Germany. They used to publish quarterly supplements of patterns and once a year would publish a whole book of patterns. They did this till 1968 then they just did quarterly supplements that would go into a 2 ring binder. I have books from 1939, 1940/41, 1949, about 1956, about 1964 and a modern package (7 supplements that you purchase all at once). The three from before 1949 are from Germany. I also have 2 supplements in that time period as well. Amazing stuff! Just the history alone is amazing! I will make a video of these one day.

Anyway, the patterns can be in book form because they use a radial grading system. In that you measure your bust measurement in centimetres, and then put a tack in that corresponding hole on their special tape measure and measure from that point to outer points on your pattern. So the pattern sizing comes from the center not the outer bit. It is a bit confusing to write out so I will make a video of this process soon. This process though works with people of all sizes from children to adults.

My 17 pounds of fabric is fabric to make 1 pattern (outfit… so most have more then one pattern) from each of my historic books. I will probably also have some extra fabric to make a modern pattern in there as well. I am also making something for our foster daughter and Tony is getting some summer PJ’s. I also have some extra fabric for things I have needed (satin for piping, some linen for a corset that I also will be making). So expect to hear more about my sewing adventures soon! As of right now I have actually finished 19 projects of different sizes this year. Some of which were very small, others were much larger. I am keeping track of everything I make to see what I make this year and how productive I can be with not leaving the house.
