Our weekend and some homeschooling…

We spent much of the weekend doing nesting activities. We now have a small freezer (we don’t have a small freezer so it is in our big freezer) of crock pot meals for after Nathaniel is born. So that is good! I think we probably have a good 3 weeks worth of meals at least.

Tony and Max vacuumed the whole house. Tony and Max got haircuts over the weekend and with the dog shaved, we shouldn’t have that much fur flying! YAY! Fenway was getting so bad that when he shaked near me the other day, I felt his fur flying. So yes it was time for him to be groomed! We also had fun eating from the egg too!

We are getting to the time that Max realizes that Nathaniel is coming soon, so he is getting “fun”. We are trying to pay more attention to him and include him in what we are doing, but he is still demanding more. I am hoping that if I can get through the rest of his school work soon (15 math lessons, and 20 reading lessons left), then I can really focus on him for fun time before Nathaniel is born. I think he needs that.

I am still trying to figure out Max’s school for next year (1st grade though he will be 5). It is definitely a work in progress. I am learning and reading a ton. I have time to figure this out as I don’t plan on starting till September, but I may start early if I am up for it after Nathaniel comes and we have it. I am still trying to figure it out though.

This is what I have so far. I would love opinions on it.

  • Literature / cultural awareness / some geography – Five In a Row Volumes 1 and 2 (this will go over to the following year, will get books too and maybe cookbook. I am debating getting the bible study to go with it too. If I do this I will have to do a bit of research before teaching Max everyday.) If you are not familiar with this, this could branch out and cover many areas depending on what I do with it.
  • Reading and spelling – Hooked on Phonics program and Hooked on Spelling
  • Reading – Bob’s books (not sure how many of these he will need, but if we get it all, we can use it for Nathaniel later on. He is reading a bit but not great so I need to help with that.).
  • History – Story of the World volume 1
  • Science – Noeo Biology 1
  • Writing – Mead number stories, letter stories capital letters, letter stories lower case letters (his writing is not really there, he just got the fine motor control for this)
  • Math – Singapore Math US edition 1A and 1B (along with any manipulatives that I need for this)
  • Geography – 50 state puzzle and map – I am not really picky on this I just want him to learn some basic state geography.

That is what I have right now. Like I said, it is a work in progress as I learn more so nothing is set in stone. Max doesn’t have the writing skills right now to do the lab notebooks that are needed for his Noeo science, but I am hoping that will come more and more with time. I may write it out for him and have him copy it or something at the beginning. I think once he “gets” writing, I will not need to work with him on it until I want him to learn cursive. I am still on the fence about teaching him that, because honestly I rarely use it and I would rather my son’s writing just be neat, rather then in one style or another. So few adults have handwriting that you can even read now, so I just want his handwriting to be clean.

One of the things I like about this plan is I will have to get very little for Nathaniel when he is Max’s age. I know this is a minor point with them being nearly 5 years apart, but it is one less thing.
