Questions that have been asked and answers…

Hello,

I forgot to answer a question yesterday so I am going to do it now. I have also been asked another question.

Question #1 – How many embryo’s will we put back?

We will put back 2 embryo’s. We are doing IVF to control how many children we have. I know that is not the typical reason to do IVF but it is our reason. The triplets were conceived via IUI and injectables. So my Peri, or High Risk OB, told us to go to IVF and to put back no more then 2 embryo’s. So that is what we have done with Baby D’s pregnancy and we will do this time as well. We could transfer just one embryo, however there is nothing to say that I shouldn’t be able to carry to term with twins. I don’t have what is called an incompetent cervix where the cervix starts opening even though the baby isn’t ready to be born. Most women that give birth when I did, if not a few weeks before I did, have this problem. That is not the case with me. We know that a twin pregnancy will be high risk, they always are, however based on the triplet pregnancy we and my doctor don’t think it will result in another severely premature birth. We also know that there is a VERY small risk of the embryo’s dividing. However we are not doing any of the normal stuff that would potentially cause this, such as Assisted Hatching, or even ICSI. Both of these procedures create a small hole in the shell of the egg/embryo and that hole can potentially help an embryo divide. However even when Assisted Hatching and ICSI are done the incidents of identical twins are low.

Question #2 What do you mean by funny looking on the outside with regards to fragmentation?

This link here shows high quality day three embryos. This is what a majority of my embryo’s looked like yesterday.

This link here shows fragmented embryo’s. I have been told that we have a few that are slightly fragmented. So I would take from that it is more or less like the picture labeled “slightly fragmented”.

Fragmented doesn’t mean it is bad, it just means that it isn’t perfect. Then again who among us is perfect. There is a chance that even the fragragmented embryo’s will be of high enough quality to make it to freezing. The way we see it, is it is all in God’s hands right now. So we can only pray.

By the way, this is what they should look like today.

Tomorrow this is what we will be transferring.

Baby E is a grade 4AB, just for reference.

Talk to you later.
Jennifer

    Good Morning Jennifer,

I’m so happy for you and Tony that everything is going so well. I continue to pray that tomorrow goes well.

Also, thank you for all the interesting information about this process. I didn’t know nearly this much when our daughter had her IFV five years ago. When our grandson’s embryo was put in it was referred to as fragmented. (He came out perfect) It’s interesting to see the differences in the embryos.

Anyway, all good and hopeful prayers will be with you tomorrow.

    Take care, Rowena

  2. I am so enjoying learning all this “stuff” about IVF. I am praying that all goes well for you tomorrow with your transfer. So excited to keep reading on your blog. Wendy
